MARVEL Digital Comics Releases Seven-Page Prologue for Secret Invasion

Let's start with the bad, the Prologue is exclusive only to Marvel Digital Comics subscribers so you may need to sign-up if you want read the whole thing. The good news is, signing up is absolutely free! All you need to do is spare some of your time filling up a few blanks about yourself. Trust me, it may just be seven pages, but it's sure as hell worth it!

FIRST LOOK: Next Avengers Animated Movie
Next Avengers: Heroes of Tommorow is a feature-length animated movie to be released by Marvel in August 2008. I know, I know.. The first time I heard about this project, I immediately thought "kid movie". But viewing this trailer has made a convert out of me. Watch the trailer and maybe you'll see why:

"The children of the Avengers must rise up to their parents' legends and stop the villainous android Ultron in Marvel's next feature length animated movie. But with the world in peril, can these inexperienced young heroes save the day?" --Marvel

It's kind of odd for Marvel to choose this as their next animated film instead of opting for more well-known heroes like Thor or Cap (Iron Fist animated, anyone??). But I have to admit, the premise is delightfuly intriguing... and I'm sure as heck checking this out. I've got 20 bucks that says this will be better than the Doctor Strange Animated. Place..Yoh..Betsa! ^_^

NOTE: I just realized that by the time the DVD for this movie is released (August 2008), we'd have already watched Wanted, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Gotham Knight and The Dark Knight. Holee Camolee.. I'm excited and devastated at the same time. lolz.

PREVIEW: CAPTAIN AMERICA #37
After the brain-melting events of CA#36, Marvel mercilessly dangles a small preview for us salivating Cap fans. Here's the solicitation from Marvel:

CAPTAIN AMERICA #37
Written by Ed Brubaker
Pencils by Steve Epting & Jackson Guice

Act Three of the epic “Death Of Captain America” storyline begins right here, as Eisner-winning writer Ed Brubaker takes things from bad to worse for the new Captain America! Acclaimed artists Steve Epting and Jackson Guice join Brubaker for Captain America #37, as the Red Skull targets the very soul of America with his latest gambit! As James “Bucky” Barnes must adjust to the new mantle once worn by his mentor, he must also search for the kidnapped Sharon Carter — whose jaw dropping discovery last issue may change the entire direction of Captain America!

Bah.. No words! Pretty pictures though. It's nice to see Steve Epting back with his rocking pencils (You too Guice. Your pencils rock too, I mean). Now comes the fun part, speculation! ^_^

The first page obviously is a flashback of some sort... By the looks of it, it's the events just right after the Allies won WWII.
Second page, Bucky practicing with the shield.. I'll say it again, Pretty pictures.
Third page, Holy Sh*&! Some dude manages to catch the shield. But who--wha?? Can it be?!?
Fourth page, another flashback of Steve and Bucky working together during the war. I like the outfit, James. lolz

Any thoughts fellow Cap fans??

Maybe they want to release fresh characters in hopes of them being as ginormous as the other marvel legends. :)

Before I saw the colored versions of the Cap artwork, I actually thought that maybe that was John Walker aka USAgent) catching Bucky's shield and stepping up to challenge him. Now that it's colored, it's obvious the Skull's 'Steve Rogers' is making his debut...remember, in Bru's first issue of Cap, he established that The Red Skull knew where Cap lived and even passed by him on the street (in disguise, of course).

Can't wait to buy Cap#37!!!

The kiddie cartoon...

It's interesting, but yeah I would've loved a more serious animated feature from Marvel. But hey, if super kids have a market, why not? Go Marvel.

@thehumancomet: I was kind of surprised that the confrontation between Bucky and "Steve" (if that is Steve, and if it's not some kind of illusion, dream etc.) happened immediately after what happened in #36. I guess we don't need to wait until #39 to see them interact.. which is awesome of course.

On Next Avengers: What I'm really interested in is the premise. I like reading/watching alternate realities of the comics that I read.. and I think Marvel's idea of the Heroes' kids taking up the mantle of their respective parents has a lot of promise. Regardless of how kiddie it may seem.

While we're on the subject of the film being aimed more at kids, I think it's worth noting that the movie does start with the mass murder of the kids parents.. leaving them all orphans, carrying the massive burden of succeeding where their iconic parents failed. That's pretty compelling stuff in my book.

Good point.

could the guy in the purple shirt be hawkeye? didn't cap train him with the shield as well?

It's not the kiddie aspect of the animation that has me worried. It was the comments of Darwyn Cooke in his TCJ interview about Marvel's animation projects that bothers me. Ever since the 90s X-Men and Spiderman cartoons you'd notice the good Marvel cartoons are always farmed out to Warner Bros. See current Spectacular Spider-man and X-Men Evolution cartoons for what I mean. If Darwyn was honestly right, the quality is hit or miss with Marvel because they dont quality check and if the outsourced animation studios are not big fans of the property, the probability of the work just being phoned in is high and probably has no heart. Sorry to be a downer.

hey good point! that could be hawkeye. i don't know if cap trained him with the shield but they did show in one of the Fallen Son issues that Clint Barton was capable of handling the shield-toss. But I think that's Steve ... or 'false Steve'. There's no reason for Clint Barton to be upset with Bucky because I don't think Clint knows that Bucky's alive...the only people that know Bucky's back are Nick Fury, Black Widow, Tony Stark, The Falcon and the late Mr. Rogers himself.

@ricolicious: I've always had my suspicions that the guy in the preview is just a red-herring of some sort. And now that you've mentioned it, it would actually make more sense if the "purple shirt guy" is hawkeye. I do think it would be a bit odd that just after seeing tank-Rogers at the end of #36, we'll immediately be seeing his confrontation with Bucky in this issue. It would be more Bru-like if he let it simmer for a while and then build it up until their face-off in #39.

@addison: Not at all (about the being sorry bit. Heh).. I haven't read the Darwyn Cooke interview you mentioned, but I've always thought that although Marvel seems to have the upper hand in big screen adaptations as of late, DC still produces more quality shows in Television (Especially in the wonderful world of Direct-to-DVD films). Unlike the shows you mentioned though, I think Marvel has more creative control over Next Avengers via Lionsgate Entertainment.. Their recent releases weren't that bad. I thought Invincible Iron Man had a good enough showing... and Doctor Strange, while not without its flaws, wasn't that bad either. Here's to hoping that Next Avengers continue the trend of solid animated Marvel films. ^_^

hmmm... i dont think 'false steve' would make his 1st appearance wearing a purple shirt... hehe but seriously, if false steve was gonna bring the smack down on bucky he'd be donning A costume at least.

clint: what makes you think you're worthy of THE mantle?!
bucky: ...um, i knew him first?
comicbookgeek wrote on Mar 26, edited on Mar 26
LoL yeah. That would also explain "False-Steve's" peculiar fashion statement. Perhaps Hawkeye also saw the television footage and just like Skull, realized that it couldn't be anyone else other than Bucky? Now he's probably mad for some mundane reason(Bucky not honoring Steve's memory well maybe?).. fight for a couple of pages.. Bucky says something that knocks some sense into Hawkeye, then they hug it out and be friends again.

Or then again, Hawkeye might instead say "Go f*ck yourself, impostor" and walk out. Heh.

hmmm. good point. and this blonde guy's hair-style does match clint barton's hair in New Avengers. what i'm not sure of is that Hawkeye knew where Cap lived before Hawkeye died in 'Avengers Disassembled'. I was kindof under the impression that the 'safe house' that Nick Fury set him up with in the Cap relaunch was a fairly new development, what with the hologram entrance and all. Still good point. It could be Clint Barton.

Considering the blonde guy's throwing the first punch, ...yeah, it's probably Clint. It fits his usual behaviour, hehe.

I still say that sticking to do an A-Next or MC2 storyline would have been easier. I haven't thought of Hawkeye until someone pointed out the Purple shirt. Thought it might be a flashback of sort that Steve was actually training Bucky to replace him someday.

Not only would it be easier but it already has a built in fanbase, plus it would be less confusing.

Hi. Just finished reading Ms. Marvel #25, which leads to next week's Secret Invasion, and I have to say that I'm quite disappointed with the Skrull reveal. Without spoiling anything, but it seems like the stakes have been lowered.
