“The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.”

With those words, millions of readers were introduced to Stephen King’s Roland --an implacable gunslinger in search of the enigmatic Dark Tower, powering his way through a dangerous land filled with ancient technology and deadly magic.

Dark Tower is an epic series of novels that Stephen King himself considers as his Magnum Opus. Now, King, in collaboration with Marvel Comics, present Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born. A graphic novel that delves deep into the origin of Stephen King's most beloved character, Roland Deschain.

Creative & Executive Director: Stephen King

Plotting and Consultation: Robin Furth
Script: Peter David
Robin Furth and Peter David have big shoes to fill. With legions of Dark Tower fans waiting with torches & pitchforks, I am happy to say that they did not disappoint. In fact, they far exceeded my expectations. I cannot imagine how better they could've written this prequel. I take my hats off to these gentlemen for a job very well done.

Penciled By: Jae Lee
Colored By: Richard Isanove
Wow. Jae Lee is probably my most favorite Korean right now (next to Jeon Ji Hyun). If only all comics looked this good, they would have a much wider fan base. I think that EVEN if Tower had a crappy storyline, I would have still enjoyed reading the series. The art is that good. No disrespect to Richard Isanove, kick-ass job coloring and all. But this is without doubt the Jae Lee show.

This book proved to me that not all licensed properties have to suck. This is an awesome read for people who like western-ish/fantasy stories. Don't worry if you're not familiar with the Dark Tower mythos. This series is a good place to start being a fan.

ReviewThe Nightmare FactoryNov 12, '07 11:02 AM
for everyone
Category:Books
Genre: Comics & Graphic Novels
Author:Based on the work of Thomas Ligotti
Written by:
Stuart Moore, Joe Harris
Art by:
Colleen Doran, Ben Templesmith, Ted McKeever & Michael Gaydos
112 full color pages
Publisher: Fox Atomic
Price: $17.99

The Nightmare Factory is based on the work of Thomas Ligotti, a horror master for whom the New York Times coined the phrase "philosophical horror" to describe his groundbreaking work. This time four of Ligotti's most terrifying stories are adapted by four distinct writer/artist teams.

In "The Last Feast of Harlequin," writer Stuart Moore and artist Colleen Doran tell of an anthropologist's journey into a surreal winter carnival, where he witnesses an ancient rite of human sacrifice to grotesque worm-like creatures.

Ben Templesmith's art accompanies Stuart Moore's adaptation of "Dream of a Mannikin," the story of a patient and psychiatrist bound together in a horrific dream.

In "Doctor Locrian's Asylum," writer Joe Harris teams with artist Ted McKeever to bring to life a small town living in the shadow of a looming asylum with a monstrous past.

And in the final story, Joe Harris and artist Michael Gaydos team up to adapt a strange urban legend that robs artists of their desire to create art when they're confronted with horrible revelations. Each story is more terrifying than the next, and the talent assembled brings a new dimension to a legendary horror writer's most chilling work.

This team has done a phenomenal job bringing Thomas Ligotti's sick imagination to life. Four gut-wrenching stories in full color graphic novel form for less than $20.00? This is an absolute steal!

UPDATE (12.05.07): They have this on stock at Fully Booked, Fort Bonifacio, for less than 800Php.
